Problem:
When creating a PDF file from Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista, the Win2PDF file save dialog does not have a "PDF Options" button at the bottom of the file save dialog.

Solution:
When Internet Explorer 7 is running in protected mode, it does not allow applications such as Win2PDF to customize the file save window. This prevents Win2PDF from adding the "PDF Options..." button at the bottom of the file save window.

The only work-around is to turn off Internet Explorer 7 protected mode. To turn off protected mode, open the "Internet Options" dialog from the "Tools" menu, click the "Security" tab, and uncheck the option labelled "Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)". Question:
Can Win2PDF produce "accessible" or ADA compliant PDF files?

Answer:
PDF accessibility is a complex topic, and PDF files may or may not be accessible depending on how you define it.

Adobe Acrobat includes features to add special "tags" to PDF files which can be used by screen readers. This is described in detail in the following article:

http://www.webaim.org/techniques/acrobat/

Win2PDF does not support creating "tagged" PDF files, but the files can still be read by the Adobe Reader "Read Out Loud" feature. PDF accessibility is described in detail on the following page.

http://www.alistapart.com/articles/pdf_accessibility

The best way to create a truly accessible PDF file is to manually edit the PDF file using the Adobe Acrobat accessibility tools. However, even "untagged" PDF files created by Win2PDF can use the "Read Out Loud" feature of Adobe Reader 8.0 for vision impaired users. Depending on how you define accessibility, Win2PDF may or may not produce accessible PDF files.

Is it possible to print from a DOS program using Win2PDF?

Solution:

If the DOS program outputs text files, it may be possible to use Win2PDF. To configure Win2PDF to capture DOS text, do the following:
1. Share the Win2PDF printer
2. Capture an LPT port using a command similar to the one listed below: "net use lpt3: \\computername\sharename"
3. In the "Advanced" tab of printer properties, enable spooling by checking on the "Spool print documents so program finishes printing faster".
4. In the "Print Processor" dialog of the "Advanced" tab, change the "Default data type" to "TEXT".

Now when you redirect text from a DOS program to the captured LPT port, it should redirect to Win2PDF. You can test this by executing the following command from a DOS prompt: "dir > lpt3"

A Win2PDF file save dialog should pop up, and the PDF file should contain a directory listing.

Win2PDF only detects email addresses when the "mailto" prefix is added.

Question:

When printing multiple documents to the Win2PDF printer, some documents are merged together. How do I prevent this?

Answer:

Win2PDF includes a feature named "Auto-merge" that automatically merges documents with the same title that are sent to the Win2PDF printer in a short period of time. This is helpful when printing worksheets from Microsoft Excel, but can cause problems in other reporting software. To disable the feature, download and install the free Win2PDF Admin Utility here:
https://helpdesk.win2pdf.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/187/15/win2pdf-admin-utility-download

After installing the Admin Utility, run it and click on the "Troubleshooting" tab. Change the "Auto Merge Interval" value to 0, and then click "Apply". If you print to the Win2PDF printer again, it will not longer automatically merge documents.

Problem:

How do you increase the quality of images in a PDF file?

Solution:

Poor image quality could be caused by a number of factors including:

-The resolution of the source image.
-The resolution of the screen or printer.

-The Win2PDF resolution.
-The zoom or scaling factor used to display the PDF.
-Image scaling that is done by the application before the image is sent to Win2PDF.

-The image compression performed by Win2PDF.

Win2PDF always renders bitmaps at the resolution selected in the "Printing Preferences->Advanced" window. Increasing the Win2PDF resolution may improve the quality of the image. If the source image is already lower than the Win2PDF resolution, then you won't see any improvement at higher resolutions.

Most screen displays have a resolution of about 96DPI, so you may not see an increase on screen even if the higher resolution image is embedded in the PDF. You may have to zoom in or print the PDF to a higher resolution printer to see a difference.

Also, screen captures are low resolution bitmaps, and increasing the Win2PDF resolution above the captured resolution will have no affect. The bitmaps can look lower in quality if Acrobat Reader is displaying the page at a magnification that isn't a multiple of 100%. Changing the Acrobat Reader view options to 100 percent typically makes the document look better.

When the "Optimize Image File Size" option is enabled in the "PDF Options" window, Win2PDF compresses images using JPEG compression. This can dramatically reduce the file size of the resulting PDF file, but it can reduce the quality of images. If you uncheck the "Optimize Image File Size" option, it may improve the quality of images.

Adobe Reader "smooths" images by default. This can improve the quality of some images, but it may make bitonal black and white images look gray. If you uncheck the "smooth images" option in the Adobe Reader "Preferences->Page Display" dialog, it may improve the quality of black and white images. The preferences dialog is under the "Edit" menu in Adobe Reader.

Problem:
How can I manually configure Win2PDF to automatically send an email as an attachment to the same email address with no user interaction?

Solution:
First install the Win2PDF Mail Helper application available at the following page:

http://www.win2pdf.com/helpdesk/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=view

Next, configure the SMTP server settings by running "Configure Win2PDF Mail Helper" at "Start -> All Programs -> Win2PDF -> Win2PDF Mail Helper". After configuring the parameters, verify that you can send an email by interactively creating a PDF file and checking the "Send PDF" option in the Win2PDF file save dialog. The Win2PDF mail helper should pop up and allow you to set the recipient email address.

After you have verified that the Mail Helper application is configured, you need to manually add some settings to the registry to send the email with no interaction. Open RegEdit.exe and browse to the following location in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dane Prairie Systems\Win2PDF

Add a DWORD registry value named "persistent" and set it to 1. This will prevent the registry settings from being deleted after each document.

Add a DWORD registry value named "file options" and set it to 0x461 hexadecimal. This will enable automatically sending the PDF file using the Win2PDF Mail Helper with no interaction.

Add a STRING registry value named "PDFFileName" and set it to the full path and file name of the desired PDF file. For example, "c:\my documents\test.pdf". The name will be used in the email attachment, and the file will automatically be deleted after it has been sent.

Add a STRING registry value named "PDFMailRecipients" and set it to the desired email recipient. You can set multiple addresses separated by commas.

If you want to set the email subject or email body text, you can create STRING registry values named PDFMailSubject and PDFMailNote as described on the following page:

http://www.win2pdf.com/doc/settinge_mailoptions.htm

If any errors occur while sending the email, they will be logged to the Windows event log.

When I create a file with Win2PDF, the permissions on the file do not allow other users to access the file even though the permissions for the folder should allow this.

Solution:

Win2PDF first writes to a temporary folder before copying to the destination folder. If the permissions of the temporary folder are different than the destination folder, the file can inherit the temporary folder permissions instead of the destination folder permissions.

Setting the permissions of the temporary folder to the desired permissions will resolve the problem. You can also set an environment variable named "WIN2PDFTEMP" to a temporary folder with the desired file access permissions. This environment variable can be set using the "Win2PDF Admin Utility" available in the download section of the support web site at:

https://helpdesk.win2pdf.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/187/15/win2pdf-admin-utility-download

The easiest way to set the temp file so that all users have permissions to your PDF files is to set the location to your "shared documents" folder which is usually:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

To set this using the Win2PDF Admin Utility, click on the "Troubleshooting" tab, type your shared documents path in the text box under "Win2PDF Temporary Folder", and click "Apply."

Answer:
Depending on the version of Chrome and the version of Windows, choosing "print using system dialog" in the Google Chrome print window can sometimes fix this issue. In this case, Chrome is sending Win2PDF outline data instead of text, so Win2PDF can't render the document as text.

Problem:
When sending a large report to Win2PDF, the processor load is very high. Is there any way to reduce the processor load while creating a PDF file?

Solution:
The only configurable option in Win2PDF that will reduce the processor load is the "Optimize image file size" check box in the "Advanced" tab of the "PDF Options..." dialog. The button to open the "PDF Options..." dialog is in the lower left hand corner of the Win2PDF file save dialog. Unchecking this option will shorten the time that it takes to complete the print job, but it may also produce a larger PDF file. It will not reduce the CPU load during the print job, it will just shorten the job.

Some applications such as Microsoft Word have a "background printing" option. Enabling this type of option may make the PC more responsive while creating a PDF file.

Win2PDF uses a technology in Windows called the XML Paper Specification or XPS. The XPS print architecture is a core part of every version of Windows since Windows Vista, and many paper printers and features such as Microsoft’s Easy Print rely on the technology. Under rare circumstances, the Microsoft XPS component may stop working because of a configuration problem or damaged dependencies.

You can test if XPS is working properly by printing to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer printer. If this fails to create an XPS file, then Win2PDF won’t work either.

If the Microsoft XPS Document Writer isn’t working, you can try the following to repair the component:

Make sure the Windows print spooler service is running (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> Print Spooler).

Check that the print spooler process has write access to the Windows temp folder. See related problems at: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1106087

Make sure “XPS Services” are enabled as described here: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/johnguin/2010/10/07/the-xps-printer-is-needed-by-the-send-to-onenote-printer/
You can also enable the feature using the dism command: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Printing-XPSServices-Features /all

Check the user permissions for the Microsoft XPS Document Writer printer and Win2PDF printer as described here: https://helpdesk.win2pdf.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/224/3/check-windows-user-permissions-for-the-microsoft-xps-document-writer-or-win2pdf-printer

Settings in your security software, such as Norton Anti-virus or McAfee Firewall, can also block the creation of .xps files. Check the settings on your security software to make sure that .xps files are not blocked.

Reinstall the XPS Document Writer printer as described here: https://helpdesk.win2pdf.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/209/0/reinstall-microsoft-xps-document-writer-on-windows-8-81-or-windows-10

If you are using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you can try running the Microsoft XPS Essentials Pack to reinstall the XPS components:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11816

Download and run the Quickbooks PDF repair tool at: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1502297-resolve-problems-printing-emailing-or-saving-as-pdf-out-of-quickbooks-desktop-quickbooks-print-and-pdf-repair-tool
Quickbooks uses the XPS Document Writer, and they have published a tool to resolve problems with the component. Quickbooks does not need to be installed to run the tool.

Run the Windows System File Checker to restore missing or corrupted system files (sfc /scannow):
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

Solution:
This is a known problem that isn't unique to Win2PDF, and we don't currently have a solution. Here are reports from users of other products with the same problem:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/da64e0e8-ec5e-4b7c-8581-8238d6d93734/outlook-2010-freezes-when-pasting-text-from-email-into-filename?forum=outlook
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1048202
http://www.dopdf.com/forum/dopdf-freezes-when-pasting-text-into-filename-field-of-save-pdf-dialog-box-t3133.html
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647400

The issue is related to the focus of the pop-up Window. The pop up sometimes appears without being the focus, so the paste won't work because Windows can't determine the active window. Clicking on the save window to activate it before performing the paste may work around the issue.

You may be able to use the Win2PDF auto-name feature of Win2PDF to automatically name the PDF file and skip the Win2PDF File Save window. You could also rename the PDF by copying/pasting in the Windows Explorer after it has been created.
