Question:
How do I update Win2PDF if it is deployed using Windows printer sharing?

Solution:
A pre-registered setup program is required when using Windows printer sharing with Win2PDF. You need to obtain an updated version of the pre-registered setup program by contacting our support department, and then you should run the pre-registered setup program on the print server to update Win2PDF. Client computers that connect to the print server should automatically detect the updated driver and
install the updates. You can force an update on a client by deleting
the shared printer instance, deleting the "win2pdf*.*" files from the
\windows\system32 folders and subfolders, and then reconnecting to the
shared printer.

There here are known problems with some versions of Windows that can prevent the upgrade from succeeding. The following knowledgebase article from Microsoft describes updated that fix the printer sharing upgrade problems:

I purchased and successfully registered Win2PDF, but I still get the evaluation version trailer page. When I try to go through the register process again, I get popup that shows the license information with registration number.

Solution:

If the Win2PDF printer has been renamed, the trailer page may not be removed. To fix the problem, uninstall Win2PDF by running "Uninstall Win2PDF" from "Start->Programs->Win2PDF", reinstall Win2PDF, and enter the registration code without renaming the printer. You may rename the Win2PDF printer after the registration code has been entered.

If the Win2PDF printer has not been renamed, open the "Enter Win2PDF License" dialog from "Start->Programs->Win2PDF". This will attempt to reset the license information and remove the trailer page.

Problem:
What Windows security permissions are required to use Win2PDF?

Solution:
Win2PDF requires administrator privileges to install, and user level privileges to create PDF files. Users must have "print" privileges to the Win2PDF printer, and must have write access to the destination folder used to save the PDF file. Users must also have write access to the Windows temp folder, and the temp folder cannot reside on a network drive.

You can define a separate temp folder for Win2PDF by adding an environment variable named "WIN2PDFTEMP" that is set to the full path of a folder on the local server drive. The "Win2PDF Admin Utility" available at the following page can set the "WIN2PDFTEMP" environment variable:

Win2PDF also accesses parts of the registry to save the last used folder name and other settings. The areas of the registry that it references are:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Dane Prairie Systems\\*
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Dane Prairie Systems\\*
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Print\\Printers\\Win2PDF\\*

You should be able to create PDF files without write access to these sections of the registry, but the last used settings will not be restored the next time Win2PDF is used.
